Analysis of Performance of Disc-Type High-Speed Generators Design with PMs

The authors calculated the key geometrical dimensions and electromagnetic parameters of a disc-type highspeed generator with permanent magnets. The computer modeling methods were applied to conduct the analysis of three main topologies for high-speed disc generators to assess the performance and to compare mass and energy characteristics. The authors managed to obtain generator output voltage dependences on the load current, found out specific mass values, re-evaluated the losses due to eddy currents in permanent magnets. Additionally, they researched the influence of tangentially magnetized PMs width in a Halbach array on the output voltage generator value. The analysis demonstrated that the structure of a disc-type high-speed generator with double-sided external rotors, Halbach arrays and a coreless stator has a low specific mass, small losses due to eddy currents and, at the same time, stiff external characteristics comparing to disc-type generator structures containing steel cores. It is identified that the change in the width of tangentially magnetized permanent magnets in a Halbach array influences the generated voltage value which allows designing more energy efficient disc-type generators.
