Genetic Algorithms for Electrical Machine Optimal Design

The article presents the optimal design of the 100 kW high-speed three-phase electrical machine with external permanent magnets and a rotational speed of 60.000 rpm by using a genetic algorithm. The calculations were made in the Ansoft Maxwell software package taking into account a multidisciplinary design process. The research of critical rotational speeds together with the impeller were conducted. The research showed the rotor behavior at the critical speed. The research of the rotor dynamics were carried out jointly with the turbine. As a result, the new electrical machine with optimal parameters was obtained. A mass was less than the mass of the initial electrical machine by 100 %. The rotor active length is below 137 % more. However, its current density is above 70 %, and losses are above 25 % in comparison with the initial electrical machine. Herewith, power and rotational speed of both electrical machines were the same. In addition, the same materials were used.
