Positive Current Reference Generation based Current Control Technique for BLDC Motor Drives Applications

Large scale penetration of electric vehicles in transportation sector in recent years has led Brushless DC (BLDC) motors to emerge as widely utilized motors for propulsion system. BLDC motor however requires sector information (rotor position) to perform commutation externally using power electronics converter based BLDC drives. Various control techniques to enhance BLDC motors performance using BLDC drives were proposed in existing literature. In this paper, a simple yet effective approach of current control technique for BLDC motor is proposed. The proposed methodology is called Positive current control based on positive current reference generation using hall based sensor and subsequently implementation of modified modulation scheme for BLDC motor drives. To evaluate the theory, the proposed technique is implemented in first in open loop configuration. It is shown that performance of modified modulation scheme is equivalent to its conventional counterpart and ensures simplified implementation. Finally, the effectiveness of positive current control technique to control the BLDC motor operation is confirmed using numerical simulation using MATLAB/Simulink environment.
