Electrical Safety – A Community Service Project

Most companies have in their Mission Statements some wording to the effect they will provide support to the local community. Generally, this involves some form of monetary support for various projects requested from the community. This paper will describe an alternate approach for providing community support by actually going to the local High School Career and Technology Centers or Community Colleges and offering to do a Basic Electrical Safety Seminar for the students. The paper has been written as a “How To Guide” so that any qualified electrical person can reach out to the schools and offer a Basic Electrical Safety seminar.The primary benefit of this project is reaching out to young and inexperienced people in the High Schools or Community Colleges before they have had a chance to learn bad habits with energized electrical devices. This helps advance the IEEE Electrical Safety Workshop mission of advancing the electrical safety culture. The secondary benefit of this project is it will introduce your company to a school full of potential future employees. So it is a Win-Win relationship for both sides.The paper gives suggestions on how to reach out to the schools. It then lists various electrical safety concepts that should be covered in the seminar. A qualified electrical person with a sense of community pride should be able to give this seminar. Think of the future lives that could be saved by reaching out to a group of young people.
