A brief overview of greening existing buildings

Implementing the concept of green building is suitable in new buildings, but there exist a huge number of old buildings, which are crafted with modern, sustainable and energy efficient features to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance of old buildings. Thus, greening existing buildings significantly reduces energy consumption, and improves environmental and other performance levels. Overall methodology used for this research includes literature review, questionnaire survey and interviews. However, this paper summarises the outcomes from the structured literature review only. A total of 19 commonly used green features were identified. It is observed that those green features target improvement of efficiency in four different areas, namely energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor air quality and materials use. This will form the basis for further study of exploring the degree of benefits of certain green features and its consequent selection / used in specific building types.
