Applications of Visible Light Communication for Distance Estimation: a Short Survey

Visible light communication (VLC) technology using light emitting diodes (LEDs) is projected to be widely used for a variety of applications due to its many advantages. Using VLC for positioning and vehicle communications is just a few of the applications envisioned for this technology. These applications, however, rely on accurate distance measurements. In this paper, a survey on distance estimation using VLC is presented. The survey presents a range of methods proposed in the literature that differ in design requirements and complexity. Furthermore, this paper also discusses the challenges and the corresponding applications for the examined methods.
