Measurements for Onboard Communication in a High-Speed Train up to 330 km/h for Selected Scenarios at 2.45 GHz

An extremely high proportion of rail transport researchers can only verify their approaches in the laboratory, as testing time on a real vehicle and a high-speed track is tremendously cost-intensive. This critical point is also the unique characteristic of this publication. All measurements were taken on a German high-speed track under real operating conditions and up to a speed of 330 km/h. During the test drive, different positions of transmitter and receiver, frequencies and modulation and coding schemes (MCS) were examined with regards to their influence on transmission quality. At the same time, channel properties were measured during the different operating conditions. Finally, this work confirms concrete modulation and coding schemes, as a suitable type of modulation for onboard communication, even in safety-critical areas of rail traffic and presents typical characteristics of channel properties in operation.
