Simulink Model for Realtime Optical Access Network Monitoring Using FBG Combination

This paper proposes the new combination scheme of uniform Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) for the purpose of monitoring fault detection of the physical layer in the passive optical networks (PON) as FTTx. Two different Bragg wavelength FBGs are connected in series in every branch linking between the optical line terminal (OLT) and the optical network unit (ONU). The reflective spectral corresponding to the FBGs combination indicate good optical fiber link of each access whereas the lack of these spectral refers to the fault of the fiber link. Increasing the number of FBGs (with different Bragg wavelength) results in multiple times increasing of the number of access branch monitoring. The simulation model of this monitoring system including laser source, single mode fiber, FBGs combination and spectral monitoring were developed using Simulink.
