Stage Solar PV Powered Water Pump with a Storage System

This paper proposes a single stage standalone solar photovoltaic (PV) powered water pumping with an efficient charging control of a battery energy storage (BES). The proposed control enhances the life of BES and it manages the seamless flow of power into the system with the confirmation that BES voltage remains lower than its critical voltage. Moreover, it also provides a reliable solution for an uninterruptable and full volume of water supply even under bad weather or in night conditions. The PV array power is a primary source of energy whereas BES acts as a backup source in proposed system. The charging/discharging control of BES, is incorporated by a bidirectional control logic of the buck-boost converter. Whereas, the optimization of power of a PV array is achieved using an improved perturb and observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control through a bidirectional buck-boost converter. Moreover, the fundamental switching of the mid-point converter at most of the time (when PV power is present) makes the overall system efficient and eliminates the need of current sensors on the motor side. Experimental responses validate the effectiveness of the battery supported motor-pump system at diverse states.
