The Critical Penetration Level in Oscillator-Based Smart Grid

Increasing renewable resource have been integrated to smart grid with excessive electronic equipment, dropping the inertia of power networks dramatically and affecting the stability of the whole system. It naturally raises the question that what the limit size of the renewable resource can be integrated into smart grid? This is a magnificent and vague problem so we attempt to solve it by analyzing the synchronization of oscillator-based smart grid as a small break point. Assuming smart grid as two coupled oscillator-networks, the maximal allowed number of oscillators, a presentation of critical penetration level to some extent, are derived for given coupling strengths. It is found that the inter-structure between oscillator-networks impacts the critical penetration level significantly. For balanced inter-structure, the critical penetration level is high. The findings may provide some help in designing the structure of smart grid and setting the local highest penetration level in certain area.
