A New Stator Resistance Estimation Technique for Vector Controlled PMSM Drive

This paper presents the novel stator resistance (R

) estimation techniques for a vector controlled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive. These estimation techniques have numerous advantages including maintenance and knowing the operating range of the machine. These techniques give indirect measurement of the temperature-rise in the stator of the machine. Therefore, an accurate estimation of the R

will help in condition-monitoring of the PMSM machine. Estimation of R
_s
is done by using the Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) which is built with reference values (current and voltage). One of the proposed stator resistance estimation technique is robust and offers dynamic performance in all four modes of operation including zero speed. Theoretical approach and simulation results are presented for various estimation techniques at various speeds and loads. The extensive simulation is performed and presented in this paper in MATLAB/SIMULINK to observe the performance of the proposed techniques and Real-time simulation results using a Typhoon Hardware In the Loop (HIL) system are presented to validate the performance of the proposed techniques.
