Design and FEM validation of Double Sided Axial Flux Switched Reluctance Motor

This paper deals with design, FEM analysis and validation of 4 phase, 24 V, 120 rpm double-sided axial-flux switched reluctance motor (DS-AFSRM). The motor design has been validated using standard FEM software packages. Repeated iteretive simulations have been performed using FEM to modify the motor dimensions in order to meet the target specifications. This has been followed by transient analysis of the motor using FEM to obtain the desired performance at rated load. A model of the split-DC power electronic converter has been also developed using inbuilt module of the software. A simplified thermal simulation has been also performed to obtain the transient temperature rise of the motor till rated load is reached and sustained. Further, an unsaturated and ideal electromagnetic model of the motor has been also developed and analysed using standard software. The results are compared with the FEM simulated results and found to be in good agreement.
