Voltage Regulation for Rural Microgrid Stabilization Using Bidirectional AC-AC Switch-Mode Converters

The implementation of a direct AC-AC switch-mode converter for microgrid voltage regulation will be investigated with aims to significantly reduce infrastructure costs by extending the supply range from distribution transformers. The application is intended for use in sparsely populated rural areas. The design consists of a series fed regulation transformer driven by an AC-AC converter with the capability to boost or buck a microgrid's voltage. A feedback controller will be added to regulate the output voltage based on microgrid usage and trends. Simulations confirmed that the regulator was able to regulate the microgrid voltage within specifications and proved to be feasible for use in rural areas.
