Solar PV Array-WECS Based Integrated EV Charging System with Dual Mode of Operation

This paper proposes a single phase charging system that utilizes both solar photovoltaic (PV) array, and wind energy conversion system (WECS) placed on the roof of the house, to operate in both standalone and grid connected modes. In standalone mode, the electric vehicle (EV) is charged using the DC power directly from the DC bus through a bi-directional DC-DC converter (BDC). However, same system uses the home loads which are fed by the generated AC voltage at point of common coupling (PCC) using a voltage source converter (VSC). In grid connected mode, the charging system exchanges power with the grid at unity power factor (UPF), while maintaining the grid current total harmonic distortion (THD) less than 5% even though the current drawn by the home loads is non-sinusoidal. In grid connected mode, variable leaky least mean square (VLLMS) based control is used to provide the harmonics compensation, and reactive power compensation. While changing the operating mode from standalone to grid connected mode, the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage is synchronized to the grid voltage to avoid the current spikes.
