PV fed Separately Excited DC Motor with a Closed Loop Speed Control

This paper addresses the closed loop control of single quadrant chopper based PV driven separately excited DC motor. As the power generated from photo voltaic (PV) is clean and abundant in nature. Therefore, utilization of DC power obtained from PV panels are more reliable and economical. The usage of PV fed DC drives increases the demand in domestic, agricultural and industrial appliances. Inorder to reduce the cost of the PV panels at maximum power point (MPP), the incremental conductance algorithm is used here. In servo applications, separately excited dc motor drive is used because of its flexible control characteristics in which chopper is used to control the motor speed due to its less loss, high efficiency, lightweight, small size and quick response. In this paper, modelling of PV along with incremental conductance (Inc-Cond) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm and DC motor along with its closed loop control using PI controller to obtain the specified speed of the drive in MATLAB-SIMULINK software. Here the steady state accuracy can be achieved using closed loop control, which consists of current and speed limit controller to achieve below or near to required speed of the dc motor drive at different modes of operation.
