Based Mode Selection Mechanism for Device-to-device Communication for Internet of Things Devices in Future Wireless Networks

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication system is increasingly applied as an essential element in serving and supporting the Internet of Things (IoT) devices at the 5G mobile networks. Since a potential D2D pair can switch between different modes (i.e. direct and cellular communication mode), there is a challenge in identifying mode selection between communicating devices. This study aims to increase the capability of the D2D communication system in the IoT devices to match the user and network operator demands. This study aims to design mode selection mechanism based on Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) theory to address the above challenges. So, the mode selection mechanism is based on Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) technique to intelligently choose and switch among the available modes. The performance of the proposed model, which can be applied in the network to enhance the quality of service for meeting user demands is tested. The improvement in the performance of the proposed mechanism is verified when the user is moving in the network at different speed rates from 5 to 40 km/h compared with Received Signal Strength (RSS) approach and Joint Mode approach. The improvement in the performance of the proposed mechanism can be obtained and compared with those of two other approaches. The results show that the proposed model has an excellent performance at different speed rates based on evaluation metrics which are delay, throughput, SINR and delivery ratio.
