Effects of radar interference on search-radar operator performance

The paper describes results of a study whose primary objective was to estimate a level (or levels) of radar-caused interference whose presence would not significantly affect the performance of search-radar operators, using plan-position indicator (PPI) displays. Extensive data obtained from a simulation experiment involving 5 Air Force and 5 FAA operators, performed by the Calspan Corporation (sponsored by ECAC), are reviewed. An interference measure is provided as well as a number of performance measures; an interim permissible interference level is suggested.
