New Strategy for Weigh-in-Motion Measurement Based on Vibration Sensors

Vibration-based technique has been utilized in various research fields such as measurement and monitoring. Recently, measuring vibration with accelerometers has been employed in weigh-in-motion (WIM)system to deal with the weight evaluation issue and to grantee the traffic safety. However, investigations on weight measurement using vibration sensors are still in its infancy and research phase. To achieve a more accurate measurement, in this paper, firstly the relationship between vibrational quantities and adding loads is demonstrated and an approximate linear result is obtained. Thereafter, in order to overcome the limitations, i.e., low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)of the conventional methods, an enforceable and effective strategy named Periodic Impulse Measurement (PIM)is proposed. Once PIM is implemented, the mature and effective signal processing techniques can be delivered to handle the inevitable noise. Consequently, more accurate measurement results can be achieved.
