Communication Infrastructure for Stationary and Organized Distributed Smart Meters

Smart Gird is an advanced electricity supply network which enables, monitoring, sensing, smart metering, control and communication. In smart grid, a vast number of smart meters (SMs) measures energy consumption and convey instantaneous information to utility via communications networks. Smart grid network (SGN) requires a reliable, efficient and secure communication infrastructure. Although the distribution of SMs in a area is random but usually they are placed apart from each other. In this article, for stationary and organized distributed SMs, we proposed a composite model in which a very popular multiple access scheme in recent time, known as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), statistically combine with well established orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme. In NOMA power division multiple access technique is used. NOMA allocate different power to different users, depends on their distance from base station (BS) and channel condition which is appropriate for Neighborhood Area Networks (NANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) of SGN. Simulation result and mathematical justification shown that the propose model with its great system capacity and high data rate, can handle huge data of smart meter network.
