Simulation of Single and Multistage Impulse Voltage Generator Using Matlab Simulink

Safety being the major concern for working in the high voltage laboratory, the alternate is to simulate the hardware system using various circuit design softwares. Thus, in this paper, broad overview of various methodologies for the generation of both AC/DC impulse voltage, simulation of the hardware setup of single stage and multistage impulse voltage generators present in the High Voltage Laboratory, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, India has been done. The primary objective of the work discusses the simulation of the actual single stage and multistage generator with different test objects whereas the secondary objective of the work is to analyze the effect of the variation in the source input voltage, wavefront resistance and the wave tail resistance on the impulse output voltage. The results for ideal system show the wave rise and wave tail time along with the peak output voltage whereas the results of various case studies show the effect of variation in the impulse voltage output, wave rise time and wave tail time with respect to the change in the system parameters.
