WIND ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS (WECS) GENERATORS: A REVIEW

This article aims to distinguish various electrical machines usually utilized in WECS focusing on their weaknesses and strengths. An in-depth review of typologies of wind turbines, types of WECS on the basis of operating speed, power generation, the size of turbine blades is presented. Moreover, Focusing on new trends to capture high energy and produce power in megawatt-scale modifications in the design of induction generators various classes of doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) are presented. Depending on the dimensions of machines an overlook on control schemes of DFIG is also presented. Grid issues, and stability problems and their causes, effects and associated suggestions regarding machines dynamics are highlighted. Finally, the improved designs of DFIG are discussed as these are promising technologies for upcoming wind farms.
