Adaptive Wide Area Damping Controller Considering Signal Transmission Delay: A Survey

Electric power system is upgraded with the installation of smart sensor devices such as phasor measurement units (PMUs), which bring system-wide measurements to the control center. These measurements are critical for monitoring and control of modern power systems. Wide-area signals provide increased observability of the inter-area electromechanical oscillation modes. Design of adaptive oscillation damping controllers with the availability of wide area measurements are proposed as an effective solution compared to local controllers. Signal transmission delay of these wide area signals deteriorate the performance of these damping controllers. This paper summarizes some of the approaches used by various researchers to mitigate the effects of time delay in designing wide-area measurements based damping controllers.
