Design and implementation of solar PV fed UPQC with advanced MPPT technique

Presently due to sudden growth in consumer load demand, penetration of Renewable energy sources (RES) has become a nice and interesting option. Among all RES a considerable growth is seen in photovoltaic system because of high availability of sun light and easy conversion. The involvement of photovoltaic with present distribution utility creates additional problem like nonlinearities, due to involvement of more and more power electronic equipment. With the rise in certain nonlinearities like voltage imbalance (voltage sag and swell), current distortions, power quality has become an important issue now. Different methodologies have been suggested in literature. A new approach is proposed in the present paper i.e combined UPQC-PV system. The UPQC basically consists of series active power filter in series and shunt active power filter in parallel to the distribution utility. The power circuit is supplied and regulated by PV. The series active filter based upon stationary d-q based theory deals with the distorted load end voltage and shunt active filter based upon instantaneous active power theory deals with the distorted source end current. Moreover an improved perturb and observe (P&O) based MPPT algorithm is incorporated with the PV boost converter for supplying switching pulse to improve performance of PV system. The PV system is directly connected to UPQC dc link via boost converter for optimal performance. The overall design of the proposed system is implemented in MATLAB Simulink software. The analysis of developed Simulink model provides further scope in advancement of combined UPQC-PV system.
