Energy Based Analysis of Traditional Routing in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is an infrastructure less wireless network and doesn't require a predefined structure including an Access point (AP) or a router. Wireless mobile nodes are deployed and they create a network amongst themselves for the sake of data transfer. To find the appropriate route from the sender to the receiver, we need routing protocols. There are numerous routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks. Some of the main routing protocols are Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing protocol (AODV), Destination Sequenced Distance Vector routing protocol (DSDV) and Dynamic Source Routing protocol (DSR). The performance of these protocols can be judged on the basis of different metrics and parameters such as Throughput, Jitter, End-to End delay, Packet delivery ratio, etc. In this paper, we analyze the performance of these protocols on the basis of Energy consumption. We create different mobility scenarios as well as different traffic scenarios and monitor the performance of these protocols in terms of the energy consumed during the simulation process. Since the nodes are given mobility, the network topology of the network changes dynamically, thereby, causing a change in the energy consumption.
