An Optimization Approach to Enhance the Performance of Single-Phase Saturated Iron-Core Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

The foremost commitment for electrical power industries is to deliver an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the consumers. To that end, Fault Current Limiters (FCL) have become a popular choice in recent times to aid in the same during a short-circuit fault in the network. The Saturated Iron-core Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SISFCL) is such a device that limits high currents by utilizing the change in magnetic permeability of its core material between saturated and unsaturated states, thereby providing a low impedance during normal operation of the system and a high impedance during a short-circuit fault. However, in order to achieve an optimized operation of the SISFCL, we are required to optimize the biasing current and no of turns of dc and ac windings. The optimization of the above parameters has been done using evolutionary optimization technique.
