In vitro Experiments of Dialysate Regeneration Unit on Waste Dialysis Fluid

Dialysate regeneration unit is an important part of wearable artificial kidney; its main aim - purify dialysate from uremic toxins, pH stabilization and electrolyte and osmotic concentration correction. In this work a combination of sorbent and electrochemical methods for dialysate regeneration was proposed. The experiment was performed on spent dialysate samples obtained from patients with chronic kidney decease. Nitrogen substrates and electrolytes were controlled during the experiment. The dialysis solution was regenerated by the dialysis regeneration unit to evaluate its efficiency. The obtained results demonstrated that elimination rate of urea, creatinine, uric acid and phosphorus was 0.26 g/h, 22.5 mg/h, 15.8 mg/h and 0.45 g/h, respectively. At the same time dialysate regeneration unit maintained pH of the solution around 7.0. Presented dialysate regeneration unit can be potentially used in wearable artificial kidneys, however further animal trials of this unit are required.
