Distance-Based Scheme for Broadcast Storm Mitigation in Named Software Defined Vehicular Networks (NSDVN)

Computer networking field is evolving day by day and new techniques like named data network (NDN), software defined network (SDN) and vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are gaining attention due to their enhanced functionalities over traditional networks. NDN is a new paradigm which mitigates the IPv4 addressing limitations due to its better and flexible mechanism. In NDN, communication between different nodes occur with the help of content names rather than IP addresses. On the other hand, SDN provides more control and manages the network efficiently by decoupling data and control plane. Communication in VANETs contains two parts (i) V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) (ii) V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure). In V2V, communication between different vehicles carry out by vehicles itself while in V2I it can be done through road side units (RSU). Broadcast storm problem occurs when same packets were flooded by each vehicle. With the help of both NDN and SDN in VANETs, broadcast storm problem can be solved. In this paper, we introduced a new technique named as Broadcast Storm Avoidance Mechanism (BSAM) to mitigate the broadcast storm issue. Proposed scheme is evaluated through simulations which show the better results of BSAM as compared to native VNDN in terms of average number of interest packets transmission and average end-to-end delay.
