BlueMap: A Pervasive Bluetooth-Based Vehicle Trajectory Reconstruction System

Nowadays, transportation network management and efficiency enhancement have become a necessity due to the rapidly increasing demand for transportation. The availability of vehicle trajectories is essential to draw a complete picture of traffic flow and investigate traffic dynamics in order to improve transportation network performance. Obtaining this information using the conventional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is expensive due to their complexity and rigidity. Over the last decade, the widely spread mobile devices, as well as vehicles, become heavily equipped with wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth motivate researchers to utilize these technologies in addressing several transportation challenges and developing novel services. In this paper, we present BlueMap - a cost- effective Bluetooth based vehicle trajectory reconstruction system, in which we utilize the advantages of Bluetooth and the mobility of compact computing hardware to provide mobile data gathering units carried on public vehicles to collect Bluetooth data from in-vicinity vehicles in order to identify traveled vehicles trajectories. The evaluation shows the ability of BlueMap to accurately reconstruct the vehicle trajectories.
