Power Stage Design of a Synchronous Buck Converter for Battery Charger Application

Rapid development of electrified transportation powered by dc voltage and need to mitigate the variability in renewable energy sources by Li-ion battery has resulted in significant interesting on high power charging circuit. However, the dynamic behavior and the internal complex characteristics of Li-ion battery make the complication of designing charger circuit as well the charging methodology. In this paper, the synchronous buck converter topology is used to minimize the conduction loss and the switching losses which are found in the conventional buck converter. This dc/dc converter circuit improved the system efficiency and increased the MOSFETs life time for continuous operation. The power stage is designed considering a large battery pack charged with hardware protection circuit for both over current and over voltage in high power application. The performance of power stage is verified considering at different dc load conditions and calculate the power conversion efficiency without incorporating the controller.
