A Sourceless Low-Power mmW Receiver Architecture Using Self-Oscillating Mixer Array in 65-nm CMOS

In this paper, a CMOS sourceless millimeter-wave receiver for next generation wireless communication and sensing systems including 5G is proposed and demonstrated. It makes use of injection-locked self-oscillating mixers, in order to enable a direct-conversion to baseband without any external LO nor an IF block, therefore greatly reducing power consumption. This architecture is created through multi-input and multi-output arrays in connection with slicing frequency spectrum or frequency band of interest. In this way, the proposed receiver supports a high transmission throughoutput based on frequency-diversified multiple inputs/outputs, which presents a unique feature in the implementation of a low-power and high bit-rate communication system.
