Design and Analysis of a Miniaturized UWB Antenna for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy

This paper proposes a miniaturized Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) ingestible capsule antenna used for wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). The antenna is a compact planar slotted microstrip patch antenna with a modified partial ground plane. Rogers TMM 13i is used as the substrate material of the antenna. The approximate environment of the whole human gastrointestinal (GI) tract with surrounding tissues is designed with CST Microwave Studio and the performance of the antenna is investigated by placing it in the centre of the environment. The size of the proposed antenna is 90 mm³(10 mm × 10 mm × 0.9 mm), resonant frequency is about 4.5 GHz with a −10 dB bandwidth of about 2.9 GHz ranging from 3.1 GHz to 6 GHz, and the radiation pattern is omnidirectional with circular polarization in the biological model. It is observed that the maximum radiation efficiency is −28.39 dB. The SAR value in GI tract is also determined for biocompatibility analysis.
