Comparison Between Optimization of PI Parameters for Speed Controller of PMSM by Using Particle Swarm and Cuttlefish Optimization

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) are one of the most popular and efficient AC motors which have been used in many industrial applications. There are various methods used to control PMSM speed. Field Oriented Control (FOC) is a type of Vector Control (VC) which is widely used to control speed of PMSM and when Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation technique (SVPWM) is employed in it results in a very effective control. In this paper, both Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Cuttlefish Optimization (CFA) are utilized to tune parameters of PI speed controller of a field oriented controlled PMSM drive which uses SVPWM. CFA is a new bio-inspired optimization algorithm. The targets of these algorithms are to optimize PI speed controller gains and to minimize the cost function which is the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) criterion. The simulation results showed the effectiveness of both optimization techniques used to tune the PI controller to track the desired speed and also they have good dynamic responses indicating that CFA is a new promising technique which we can take great advantage from it.
