Model Predictive Speed Control of Five-Phase PMSG Based Variable Speed Wind Generation System

This paper presents a model predictive speed control for variable speed variable pitch wind turbines (VSVPWT). A large scale five-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is grid tied through a five to three-phase back-to-back converter (BTBC). Below rated speed, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is applied, while above rated speed, pitch control is applied at the machine side converter (MSC) to extract the optimal maximum power. The grid side converter (GSC) regulates the dc-link voltage in order to achieve active power injection with unity power factor. Finally, the active crowbar element is used to eliminate the dc-link over voltage. The MPC offers good speed control dynamics during variable wind speed while maximum power is attained using the MPPT algorithm. The pitch control guarantees safe wind turbine (WT) operation at rated power. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is confirmed with Matalb/Simulink.
