Augmented Reality on Mobile Platform: A New Way to Instantly View and Display Foreign Currency Exchange Rate

A banknote or cash has been the primary payable way for daily trade activities in many countries, both developed countries (e.g, Germany, Japan) or developing countries (e.g. Vietnam, Cambodia). Cash appears both in coins and notes, with significantly different appearances and values, which might lead to many issues for foreigners or travelers from developed countries where electronic payment is the most commonly used. Moreover, in developing countries, the foreigners could be tricked by local residences as they are not familiar with the local currency note presentation and the exchange rate. However, this problem could be effectively solved by applying the theory of Augmented Reality (AR) where we could merge the virtual information (actual value information) with a real-world object (local currency notes) in real time. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of an AR application running on a mobile platform which is able to help the foreigners to identify the local currency and currency exchange rate. The experimental results were confirmed that the system can work smoothly in mobile devices that using Android and IOS systems.
