Electric Discharge Plasma in Air Bubbles for Effluent Wastewater Treatment from Chicken Slaughterhouse

The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of electric discharge plasma in air bubbles for disinfecting the effluent water from wastewater treatment plant of chicken slaughterhouse. The electric discharge plasma generator mainly composed of a simple half wave voltage doubler circuit with 50Hz AC power supply via the discharge electrode in aeration capillary tube. The electrical characteristics of underwater discharge plasma were elucidated by measuring the voltage and current. The results shown that the peak discharge voltage was collapsed to 4 kVp during electrical glow discharge plasma in air bubbles underwater and the current waveform was a half wave of sinusoidal waveform at 400 mAp. After effluent water treatment with the plasma for 10 minutes, it was found that total coliform was decreased from 240 x 10⁵ MPN/100 ml to 15 × 10⁵ MPN/100 ml. Moreover, the experimental result also shown that microbes or bacteria in the effluent were eliminated to a decrease in chemical oxygen demand from 215 mg/L to 186 mg/L. Furthermore, the results of electric conductivity, temperature, and pH of the treated effluent water with electric discharge plasma in air bubbles will be discussed in correlation with both dissolved reactive chemical species in the treated water and the relation of optimization costs with the treatment time.
