Controlling Maximum Window of TCP NewReno in Underwater Wireless Sensor Network

Acoustic communication in a submarine wireless sensor network (UWSN) is known for its low performance in terms of packet loss during transmission. Also, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is very sensitive to packet loss which makes its integration into underwater networks too difficult since the default settings used in terrestrial communication are not suitable for this kind of environment. However, there are not enough studies of TCP behavior in the underwater environment from research. It is therefore necessary to study the behavior of this protocol in this aquatic environment in order to adjust these parameters to achieve a more efficient operation. In this article, we aim to evaluate the performance of TCP NewReno as a transport layer for UWSNs in order to improve its performances in an underwater environment. We are therefore especially interested to study the effect of controlling the maximum window of TCP in the underwater network under different scenarios in order to improve the communication of our underwater network. In addition, we present some appropriate parameters in different studied scenarios that will be used to optimize performance. To present the results of our work, the Aqua-sim simulator based on ns2 was used to show performance improvements in terms of packet delivery gain and packet delivery retransmission rate. The results of the simulations in different scenarios while varying the maximum performance window of TCP NewReno provide more efficient result than those obtained using standards parameters of the TCP NewReno in the UWSNs.
