A Microstrip Patch Antenna Sandwiched Between a Ground Plane and a Metasurface for WiMAX Applications

In this paper, we present the design and characterization of a planar low-profile microstrip patch antenna sandwiched between a finite ground plane and a metasurface for WiMAX applications. The radiating element is a rectangular patch fed by a microstrip line, whose lower ends are truncated with a semicircle, while the metasurface is a bidirectional array of 4×4 metallic square cells. The antenna yields an impedance bandwidth of 3.14-3.83 GHz (20%) for |S11| <; -10 dB. Due to the successful implementation of metasurface on the patch radiator, the antenna offers promising radiation characteristics including high broadside gain (<; 8.6 dBi), high radiation efficiency (<; 95%), and stable directional radiation patters in the entire bandwidth. Moreover, the antenna has a compact overall size of 0.81λo × 0.81λo × 0.058λo which makes it a potential candidate for WiMAX applications.
