A Compact Wearable Antenna Using EBG for Smart-Watch Applications

An E-shaped antenna incorporated with electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) is presented for smart-watch applications. In order to fit the requirement of the smart-watch, the antenna need to be compact, lightweight, low profile, least SAR values, highly directive, and robust against the load's impact caused by the wrist tissues. The presented design has reduced the radiation towards the wrist tissue by around 23 dB, sustains against the loading impact caused by wrist tissue and the maximum averaged SAR values are obeyed both standard FCC and CNIRP. . The design was attain an efficiency of more than 70% and directivity of 6.5 dBi at the desired resonant frequency of 2.4 GHz even when it is positioned over a wrist tissue. Therefore, the presented design is capable to work efficiently for Bluetooth or WIFI system.
