Millimeter-Wave Microstrip Antenna Array Design for Future 5G Cellular Applications

5G denotes the next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G, which will operate at millimeter-wave frequency band. In any wireless device, the design of an efficient antenna has a positive impact on overall system performance. This paper presents a high gain millimeter-wave microstrip antenna array with a simple profile structure - Operating at 29.8 GHz. Based on the best optimized single element patch, a 4 element patch array antenna is proposed. The antenna's is designed on a compact Roger RO3006 substrate with relative permittivity (ε r) of 6.15 having dimensions 7 × 14.5 × 0.13 mm3 for 2×1 and 9 × 27 × 0.13 mm3 for 4×1 at the resonant frequency of the antenna is 29.8 GHz. Return loss, VSWR and radiation patterns were simulated by ANSOFT HFSS. The simulation result of VSWR was compared to this obtained by CST MWS.
