ACompact AMC-Based Novel Monopole Antenna for RFID Applications

This paper presents a novel and compact AMC-based coplanar waveguide (CPW) antenna designed with hexagonal ring and patch elements for RFID applications. The AMC structure is designed with meander line that reflects the incident wave with 0° phase reflector. The AMC cell is designed using CST microwave studio. An AMC unit cell alone, monopole antenna and a monopole with AMC surface with electrical size of 0.02λ_{0, 0.}2λ₀ and 0.37 λ₀ are designed at 868 MHz (European band) used for RFID applications. The proposed monopole antenna with AMC reflecting surface provides an overall realized gain of 6.7 dBi. The simulated results are characterized in terms of return loss, gain and radiation pattern of the antenna with and without artificial magnetic conductor AMC.
