Validation of Numerical Simulation on the Flow Field of Submarine with Various Types of stern appendages

Accurately simulating of the flow field around the submarine is significant to predict the hydrodynamic performance of a submarine. In this paper, numerical calculations of the three-dimensional viscous flow field around the SUBOFF submarine with full appendages (AFF-8) are simulated by solving Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with different viscous models including eddy viscosity turbulence models $(k-\epsilon, k-\omega $, and SST $k-\omega)$ and Reynolds stress turbulence models (SSG Reynolds stress, Omega Reynolds stress, and BSL Reynolds stress). It indicated that numerical implementations are creditable by comparing experimentally measured data with simulated results, results show closer agreement between the computed wake velocities at the propeller disc using SSG Reynolds stress models and the experimental data both quantitatively and qualitatively. Besides, three types of fillet are designed at the main body-stern appendage junctions to reduce horseshoe vortex production and intensity. Results show that the fillet in convex shape decreases circumferential nonuniformity of inflow of the propeller and improves the quality of the propeller disc flow.
