Improving Performance of Autonomous Power Supply Systems Using Brushless Synchronous Generators

Security of power supply to essential services is an important task that should be solved through reliability support of their on-site power supply systems, which include autonomous backup power sources. The article establishes advantages of using brushless synchronous generators as power sources. However, an inertial exciter in a control circuit significantly reduces performance of excitation control system and leads to lower voltage quality in transient states of autonomous power supply systems. A comprehensive solution to the task of performance improvement in these systems consists in application of optimal control laws. Synthesis of optimal performance systems is among high-priority problems of automatic control theory. There is a number of unsolved challenging tasks associated with development of applied numerical approach, which define potential practical application of optimal control theory. Implementation of numerical approach creates a problem of iteration process convergence to a desired solution. To solve an optimization problem the article reviews a method of directional selection of initial values of variables in iterative computation sequences. When using a method of selection for initial values of variables, the order and structure of simultaneous equations (solved through a system of equations) change when being solved. This is what determines successful solution of the optimization problem. Since optimal control is most effective at greater disturbances, a combined method of excitation control in brushless synchronous generator is suggested. Greater disturbing actions are generated by an optimal performance regulator that ensures minimal voltage recovery time of the generator. Proportional-integral controller with proportional feedback to the excitation voltage of synchronous generator provides damping of electromagnetic oscillations in the system at small deflections of controlled variable.
