Abstract:
Precise monitoring of soil and micro-climatic conditions of a crop through Internet of Things (IoT) plays a pivotal role in taking appropriate action to boost yield. Deploying extensive sensing systems on the farm to achieve this is however not always possible due to various factors such as poor network connectivity in remote areas, cost dynamics associated with the farmer due to small land-holdings especially in the developing countries and value proposition of the intervention for the specific crop. In this paper, we propose a scalable and affordable IoT framework that has been developed to overcome these limitations. We share through a case-study our experiences with the deployment of the proposed IoT framework for a period of over six months.
