Pollution Detection for Insulators of Power System Based on Image Processing

Under adverse weather conditions, such as heavy fog, drizzle, snow melt, pollution flashover is easily occurred which can seriously damage the reliability of the power supply. Solving the safe operation of transmission lines is a top priority and has important implications for solving the flashover problems. In this paper, we proposed an approach of pollution detection for insulators of power system based on image processing. It enables the transmission lines to change from planned maintenance into condition-based maintenance. It uses OTSU to obtain segmented images and uses Fisher criterion to determine insulator contamination. The experimental results show that this method is effective.
