Numerical Simulation of Reversed Cherenkov Radiation Using a Time-Domain DG Method

It is well-known that charged particles moving faster than light in a medium generate forward Cherenkov radiation. When the particles move in metamaterials, due to the negative refraction, the radiation flips backward, i.e., it generates the so-called reversed Cherenkov radiation (RCR). Though some numerical results have been presented by other researchers, most of them are done by commercial packages which limit the applications. Here we use our own developed time-domain discontinuous Galerkin method to reproduce these interesting phenomena. These numerical tools will help researchers understand RCR better and design more efficient Cherenkov detectors.
