Analysis of Effectiveness of PMU based Wide Area Monitoring System in Indian Power Grid

Indian power sector is growing at an enormous rate due to rapid growth of industries and increase in per capita income which demands high generation capacity. Also due to expansion of transmission and distribution network, deregulation, increased applications of power electronic devices and competitive electricity market, makes the Indian grid more complex. This forces the grid to operate close to their operating limits to utilize available assets more effectively. However it causes the grid to operate under highly stressed condition. Therefore operator should be more aware about the operating states of the grid for its smooth functioning. PMU based Wide Area Monitoring System possess effective features that enhances the situational awareness of the of the grid operator against various abnormal condition. This paper discusses the importance of WAMS in Indian Power grid and presents its deployment in India so far.
