A Method of Analyzing Geomagnetic Storm Damage to Power Grid

As grid complexity and voltage levels increase, the impact of geomagnetic storms on the grid is also increasing. Calculating the geomagnetic induced current (GIC) generated by the magnetic storm and determining the weak links in the system are critical to assessing the magnetic storm disaster and the post-disaster power grid recovery. This paper provides a method for calculating GIC, reflect the impact of the magnetic storm on the power grid in the reactive way, and proposes a modified model of IEEE RTS-79. Based on this, the weak link in the power grid under different degrees of magnetic storm disaster is determined, and a new method to resist the disaster of magnetic storm is proposed. The establishment of the model lays the foundation for the future recovery of the post-disaster power grid. The analysis method of this paper contributes to the treatment of future geomagnetic storm damage to the power grid.
