Investigation on Arc Dielectric Resonator Antenna and Arc Microstrip Patch Antenna

In order to investigate the potential of dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) in area of conformal antennas, an arc DRA for conformal devices is compared with a traditional conformal arc microstrip patch antenna (MPA). The two antennas are the simplest forms of their kinds: they are deformed from rectangular DRAs and rectangular MPAs, respectively. They are designed to have similar size, material, and resonant frequency so that the comparison is reasonable. In addition, they work in the most common modes and have the most basic feed mechanisms at the meantime. The results indicate that the arc DRA enjoys wider beamwidth, broader bandwidth, higher gain and better cross-polarization suppression. Therefore, arc DRAs are qualified candidate for conformal requirement. Besides, it is also shown that arc DRAs are able to work as wide-beam or omnidirectional antennas.
