A Model of an Ultra -Fast Moving Magnet Actuator for Power Switches in Medium Voltage Grids

The development of smart grids requires fast circuit breakers, where conducting contacts are separated by actuators. This paper describes the investigation of an electrodynamics moving magnet linear actuator with FEM and an analytical model. Geometry parameters define flux tubes, which yield reluctances for a magnetic equivalent circuit. Its solution allows to calculate a mean force and potential accelerations of this moving magnet actuator. The analytical model is evaluated numerically, calculating Pareto fronts for acceleration and actuator volume. The results are verified by FEM simulations and one demonstrator, also including transient operation.
