Tunable White Light System for Mission-Critical Control Room and Anti-Fatigue Room for Shift Workers: A Case Study

This case study presents an energy engineering design solution for a mission-critical Control Room suite. The consequences of worker fatigue the overarching need for alertness of shift workers, especially in the absence of natural daylight is discussed. The design and its implementation are presented. Results from post-testing with light meters and spectrometer data loggers and pre=test data from a worker survey are presented. The installed, programmable, tunable (dynamic) light emitting diode (LED) is responsible for regulating the solid state devices' illuminances and correlated color temperatures (CCT) of the Control Room and the Anti-Fatigue Room. A custom “narrative script” has been keyed to time cues related to shift-worker tasks to modify the light quantity and quality over the course of 12 hour shifts in the Control Room suite. The proposed design is expected to provide a solution for shift workers while fulfilling the international standard for workers in mission-critical control rooms. This can be beneficial to a location-specific working environment while improving safety issues.
